Chad Announces Closure of Sudan Border

(MENAFN) Chad has shut its border with Sudan effective Monday, warning that relentless cross-border breaches by Sudan's warring factions pose a direct threat to its national security and territorial sovereignty.

Minister of Communication and Government Spokesman Gassim Cherif Mahamat confirmed the decision in an official statement, saying the closure "aims to prevent the risk of extending the conflict to Chad, protect citizens and refugees, and maintain the stability and territorial integrity of our country."

All movement of people and goods across the shared frontier has been halted with immediate effect. However, Mahamat noted that select exemptions could still be permitted under tightly controlled conditions, provided they are "strictly justified by humanitarian reasons."

The government cited "repeated incursions and violations committed by the warring parties in Sudan on Chadian territory" as the driving force behind the unprecedented measure.

Chad's border with Sudan stretches thousands of kilometers and has long been regarded as one of the most difficult frontiers to police in the region. The decision comes as Sudan remains locked in a devastating civil war that ignited in April 2023, when the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces turned their guns on each other. The violence has since claimed tens of thousands of lives and uprooted millions — many of whom have sought refuge across the border into Chad — making it one of the world's most severe humanitarian catastrophes.
